The wind was so strong today and blew in such gusts across the freeway that my car seemed at times to be flying just inches off the pavement. When I came up along a semi-truck, I wondered if the wind could be powerful enough to push me under its wheels and so I looked at the highway ahead, worried about the curves and turns and whether I could go fast enough to get out in front of the truck but before I could think about it enough, I accelerated, deciding somehow that the risk of speed was less than the threat of being smashed between the semi and the concrete wall.

And afterward, I thought about how good it felt to step on the gas and steer completely clear of trouble.
