Only for Now Friday Round-Up

We are having a socially-distanced family gathering at the park on Sunday. This works pretty well now but sitting six feet apart under the trees will be challenging for Thanksgiving and Christmas in Wisconsin. Things could change by then, but I don’t think so. Space heaters in the driveway?

This business with the post office is just too much. Trump’s brazen effort to diminish the United States Postal Service in order to increase his election chances could be called ‘the last straw’ but it would have to stand in line. Here’s the deal though. We might be outta gas as far as raising a fuss is concerned, considering every minute of Trump’s existence in the White House has brought some new blasphemy, but we have to complain about this. The post office, man! it brings checks to old people and care packages to college students and ballots to the election offices all over this country. Call your reps! Rev it up one more time.

This was Shark Week. And not just on TV, but that’s a different story. Shark Week has gotten very cerebral which is great but, on a hot summer night in August, part of me wishes for the Shark Week of old, the grisly and spottily acted re-enactments of shark attacks. I’m not all that sophisticated actually.

I saw my brother on a zoom call a few days ago. He is not well. I guess that zoom is kind of a blessing because without it I wouldn’t have seen him but it broke my heart. And that’s really all I can say about it.

Life is all about getting your footing and losing your footing and then getting your footing back again. I have forgotten what had me cowering last week and I feel as robust and able and oblivious to worry as a person could possibly be. That could change in minutes. But I know it’s only temporary. It’s all temporary. Only for now.

Only for Now (Avenue Q)

{Why does everything have to be so hard?
Maybe you’ll never find your purpose
Lots of people don’t
But then I don’t even know why I’m alive
Well, who does, really?}

Everyone’s a little bit unsatisfied
Everyone goes ’round a little empty inside
Take a breath, look around
Swallow your pride for now
(For now)

Nothing lasts, life goes on
Full of surprises
You’ll be faced with problems
Of all shapes and sizes

You’re going to have to make
A few compromises for now
For now

But only for now
(For now)
Only for now
(For now)
Only for now
(For now)
Only for now

For now we’re healthy
For now we’re employed
For now we’re happy
If not overjoyed

And we’ll accept the things
We cannot avoid, for now, for now
For now, for now

But only for now
(For now)
Only for now
(For now)
Only for now
(For now)
Only for now

Only for now
(For now there’s life)
Only for now
(For now there’s love)
Only for now
(For now there’s work)
For now there’s happiness

But only for now
(For now discomfort)
But only for now
(But now there’s friendship)
Only for now
(For now)
Only for now

Only for now, sex
Is only for now, your hair
Is only for now, George Bush
Is only for now

Don’t stress, relax
Let life roll off your backs
Except for death and paying taxes
Everything in life is only for now

Each time you smile
(Only for now)
It’ll only last a while
(Only for now)
Life may be scary
(Only for now)
But it’s only temporary

Everything in life is only for now

  1. I am imagining being zipped up in sleeping bags, sitting on the snow covered porch with a large outdoor heater running nonstop. We’ll see.
